Psychologists are professionals who study psychology for four years in undergraduate school. Once they obtain their Baccalaureate degree in psychology, they study an additional four to six years in psychology graduate programs to receive their doctoral degree. Ph.D. psychologists must complete an internship and write a doctoral dissertation to complete their degree, as well. Each state has its own requirements for licensure, but usually the psychologist must complete 2,000 hours of supervised work to become eligible to apply.

Psychiatrists are professionals who attend medical school upon completion of their undergraduate degree, which is usually in either the biological or physical sciences, e.g., biochemistry, physics, etc. After graduating medical school, where their curriculum is identical to those studying to become internists, radiologists, general practitioners, etc., a physician will then complete internship and residency programs in psychiatry. Currently, most psychiatrists restrict their practices to medication management.

Masters degrees in Social Work or Counseling (MSW or MA) are usually achieved in one to two years post Baccalaureate study. Many of these professionals majored in psychology as undergraduates. They, too, must complete practicum experiences prior to having the Masters degree conferred. States have their own individual licensing requirements.
